Two colour relief print 60 x 60cm
edition of four
In this print, I was interested in a circular form similar to the Chinese Han Dynasty 'bi'. The exact significance of these mysterious jade discs is uncertain but I was drawn to the proportion of the inner circle to the overall circumference. The linear treatment of the surface was suggested by an Anasazi pot from New Mexico. The painted decoration of the pot is liberally re-interpreted within the three radiating sections of the surface, creating a helix form.
The print is a relief reduction print on Chinese Wenzhou paper. I printed the cobalt blue disc first. While this first colour dried, I cut the second relief surface using the same plate. This was printed in translucent white creating the paler blue colour of the finished print.
