watercolour and pencil on A5 card
private collection
This image is a development of a sketchbook idea used for an exhibition in October 2008. I was interested in the idea of a mass supported on thin 'legs'. There are niches in the surface of the body. Empty niches for me signify a 'reserved' space or interior that something can or may be contained in. The empty niches in English cathedral fronts, the result of the destructive zeal of Protestant reform seem to me in a way more powerfully expressive of a kind of spiritual placement than the niches which retain their carved figures.
