Colour relief print
edition of three
210 mm x 295 mm
Balance and form are two qualities the artist seeks to find in an image. This print developed from the initial motif of three sculptural forms on a granular field. I liked their form and relationship. The struggle then was to find the end point of the composition. The other elements were created and added to bring a balance to the print. It was a journey. Often, in printmaking, I start with a imagined idea of the finished piece. You need to plan a direction as you have to create the physical matrix for a relief print. With this print, after the initial stages, I had to improvise and react to the demands of the image as it came into being on the paper. The result, which is the excitement of printmaking, is many times different to how I imagined it.
