Archaeology has recovered artefacts from many prehistoric civilisations that use the form of the phallus as a symbol of fertility and vigour. In an agrarian society, that lived closer to nature and the animal world, I imagine there would not have been the prudish attitudes to such symbols that our modern society often holds. Human and animal reproduction visibly relied on the male of the species.
However, there are other issues with identifying as male in these times. The sexual predator is rightly being challenged in the media and sanctioned. My print is not an endorsement of that kind of male political or social power over vulnerable women or men. I made it rather as an acknowledgement of the sexual potency that can be enjoyed by both partners when in a loving and equal relationship.
