There's a lot to be said about the role of the black sheep in the mythology of communities around the world. Like the scapegoat, the black sheep is burdened by conventional rules of behaviour and the censure that follows when these rules are deemed to be broken. It's also true that being identified as a black sheep means that disapproval and closer supervision of your character is present while the, perhaps greater, misdemeanours of the other 'sheep' can be ignored. Sometimes we need to celebrate the independent thinker who is prepared to challenge the conventions of the flock.
